Novartis was established in Egypt in 1962 as a joint venture company between CIBA, GEIGY, Sandoz and Wander under the name of Swiss Pharma. In 1970 CIBA and GEIGY merged to become CIBA-GEIGY. Finally in 1996 Novartis was created with the merger of CIBA GEIGY and Sandoz. Novartis Egypt consists of the divisions of Pharma, OTC and Sandoz.

Over the years, Novartis Egypt and its predecessor companies have worked to provide innovative medicines, accessible generics and, nonprescription medicines to the Egyptian people.

Therapeutic areas
The company's pharmaceutical products cover a wide range of therapeutic areas such as: oncology, blood diseases, cardiovascular diseases, organ transplant, tissue, immunity, neuroscience, ophthalmology, high blood pressure, respiratory diseases, rheumatism and arthritis.  These drugs are used for the treatment of many chronic diseases such as leukemia, Mediterranean anemia, epilepsy, Alzheimer's, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, pain and headaches. Novartis also has a Consumer Health Department which develops nonprescription drugs.

Global Production Center
At 75 million medicine packs per year, Novartis Egypt's global production center is the seventh Novartis affiliate worldwide in terms of production. The drugs are distributed nationally and exported to countries all over the world in Africa, Europe and Latin America.
One of the largest research-based multinationals in the world, Novartis currently has over 140 products under research and development. It also publishes an independent magazine about the company’s research and development projects. In 2007, Novartis invested $732,000 in research in cooperation with institutes such as the National Cancer Institute and University Hospitals all over Egypt, in the therapeutic areas of cardiovascular, metabolism, neuroscience, ophthalmology, respiratory, and oncology.
